It seems there’s good news for Nigerian bank customers.
Yes, Nigerian commercial banks have recently re-enabled international transactions on naira-denominated debit cards. As of July 4, 2025, UBA GTB and Wema Bank clearly announced that their naira cards can once again be used abroad for POS, ATM, and online purchases in foreign currency.
Forget the days when we had to reach for our dollar cards. The new era is here: our naira debit cards now work across borders—online, at ATMs, and in your favorite foreign shops.
The Big News:
As of July 4, 2025, UBA, GTB and Wema Bank officially reactivated international payments on their naira cards.
This marks the end of a five-year pause that started during Nigeria’s FX crunch in mid‑2022
Why It Matters:
1. Freedom to Spend Anywhere
Shop on Amazon, pay streaming services like Netflix or Spotify, and 🛍️ grab those travel essentials abroad—all using NAF.
2. Simpler & Smarter Finances
No more managing multiple cards and fixing exchange balances. Just one card, one currency.
3. Economic Boost for All
Restoring international transaction use reflects healthier FX systems and renewed trust in the naira .
A Note on GTBank:
While GTBank’s website still says its naira Mastercard is “accepted worldwide” , the bank hasn’t made a definitive new statement like UBA and Wema. If your Naira card is with GT, it’s worth checking your email notifications as some people have begun receiving mails from the bank in affirmation to this inclusion or contacting customer support directly to confirm if global access has been reactivated for your account.
What's Next for You:
UBA, GTB & Wema Cardholders: Start exploring—your naira card is now global!
